A choose-your-own-adventure game
Welcome to "The Button", a dystopian choose-your-own-adventure game. You play as The Boy, who has been given a kill switch button that can instantly reduce the world to ashes. Your mission is to navigate through this dreary and depressing world, ruled by the conglomerate Mega-Corp, and decide whether to use the button or not. Your choices will impact the outcome of the game, but all paths lead toward destruction.
You wake up in your small apartment, feeling numb to the world around you. You look outside and see the familiar sights of the city, but with a twist. Everything is controlled by Mega-Corp, and people are living their lives like robots, working tirelessly to keep the company running. You feel like you're living in a nightmare, and the button in your hand seems like the only way out.
Option 1: Press the button
You can't take it anymore. You press the button, and the world explodes into flames. You watch as the city burns, feeling a sense of relief that everything is finally over. But as the smoke clears, you realize that you're the only survivor. You're stuck in a world of ashes, with nothing left to live for.
Option 2: Delay using the button
You hesitate to use the button, knowing that it will cause destruction beyond imagination. You decide to delay using it and explore the city instead. As you walk through the streets, you witness the atrocities committed by Mega-Corp firsthand. People are being treated like machines, and the government seems powerless to stop it. You realize that using the button may be the only way to end this cycle of oppression.
Option 3: Search for a way out
You don't want to use the button, but you can't stay in this world forever. You decide to search for a way out, hoping to find a place where you can live in peace. You travel through the city, dodging Mega-Corp's surveillance, and finally stumble upon a group of rebels who are fighting against the company. They welcome you with open arms, and you join their cause. Together, you work to take down Mega-Corp and build a better world.
No matter which option you choose, the world is doomed. The Button is a commentary on the direction technology and society is heading, where corruption and heinous acts are normalized. It is up to you to decide whether to accept this reality or fight against it. Are you ready to press the button?
A really great video for those of us interested in pursuing a career in narrative design.
